1942. Ironed for Dora + did some pressing. Took Dora to bandage center. Went to bus station + saw Rita off for home - but missed Hazel [Gimes?] who drove her own car, till she + K came down. Visited an hour - 1st in 27 years. Owen + I left Ames at 3:45 - W.L. in 4 hours - Airmail from Hans letter from Hilda, card from Frank. 1943. Kathryn + Frank drove to Beaver Dam for Hans who missed bus there. Frank went to State Fair. Rest of us to Church for dedication of service plaque. Sig's name on. Chaplain Waldrup of [illegible] + Field spoke. HOT. Hans + I began reading Van Loon's "Lines" 1944. Packed for myself + Hans. Missed a bus in to Wash. But an Alex lady picked us and our 4 suitcases up + took us in. We left on 5:30 P.M. Liberty Limited on the Pa. Read Sept. Natl. Geographic in Club car, visited with Minn. lady. We slept in upper berth - all we could get. 1945. Packed Hilda's books, etc. into a closet at Weidemann's. Drove to Madison, saw ration board twice about a tire, lunch at Middleton, got mail, put 2 boxes into church. At Wittenburg's. Drove to Baraboo supper + overnite at Adele's. Hans' mother's earphones away for repairs. Cool. furnace fire. 85.7° 1946. Morning paper says train service from Mukden resumes today! Washed hose (I do not often wear them so far in China) and hung them on roof before breakfast. Read John Brophy's "The Ridiculous Hat," an Eng novel, also rather ridiculous, lent me by Miss Bott. Sat on lawn after tea, on roof in eve, where Mrs. Wang had visitor from [Tiayuan?].
