September 9 1942 11th Slept till 7- after K. had gone to work- late getting at work when breakfast is at 8. Ironed till noon. Frank ate _ worked with bee inspector. Canned tomato soup. 1943. Good sleep at Calumet Hotel, Fond du Lac. Saw Pere Marquette freight boat come in at Manitowoc + unload train of cars, 2 for U.S.S.R. Saw ships + submarines in the making in big shipyards, Dinner there. "Submarine chasers in making at Sturgeon Bay, some cherry orchards, etc. At Green Bay till 9. We drove to Appleton + stayed in Appleton Hotel. Slept right thru rain in spite of hard bed. 76° 1944. Baked whole wheat raisin bread, did more cleaning, wrote Sig + first for MTT for nearly a mo. Went to Alex. for Sig's glasses, mailed "Journey Among Warriors" to Mrs. Kruse. Sgt. here- thinks Sig has gone to India! She left Monday. 1945. Left Marietta by 7. Very mountainous driving on (alt.) Hiway 50. across W. Va. a corner of Md. + Virginia, getting home at Alex. at 6. Breakfast by a mt. stream + spring in a roadside park. Supper at home. Irene Norberg told us sad news of Lloyd being killed. 88° 1946. Sunny once again! UNRRA jeep took us to office at 8:20. Waited hr or so then went with Rudolph Gung to Nat'l Exp. Sta. west of Peiping. Took several kodachromes + Hans movies. Met H.T. Chang, I.S.C. '43! who showed us over the fiedls + ancient bell, 43 T. Went thru "special days" bazaar in next block. Got bowl, pins. Visited with Swedish missionaries on lawn in eve.
