September 15 1942. Thru washing by 10:30- then it rained! Got them dry by night. Frank home in bed all day- headache + temp. I voted Rep. at primaries. Got new hat + shoes etc. in Madison. Saw Signe. Elynor here in eve. Gov Heil renominated in spite of us. 1943. First sunny day this week. Only had 6 washerfuls. Ironed some. Picked more limas. Awake from 3 to 6 A.M. then slept till 8. Wrote Sig + C Kirk + finished news. Made 6 calls. Sold 12 bonds. 11 to Hennings. 1944. Sat in sun + read our "Time" magazine. 2 trips to garden- onefor flowers for Jo Diehl Koch, where we drove 14 miles around to go for supper- but they live just across the Potomac! K home- thru at Am. Chlorophyll, Inc. 1945. Rainy- I got new parasol. We shopped in Alex. got Hans' winter underwear. Did some cleaning + pressing. 87° 1947. 14 more Danish refugees arrive from Mukden 6 AM. Hans + I had 7 o'clock breakfast, but UNRRA vehicle failed to appear and we took ric shas to RR station + left at 9:15 for Paotingfu, arriving at 1:30. Rev Gall + dan. Edith (UNRR nurse), Drs. Ralph, Lewis, + "Bill" Cochrane met us. We walked to Presbyterian Comp. HOT in my suit. Visit with Miss Orpha Gould, at whose place we slept on our first innerspring mattress in China. Wonderful supper at the doctors' home.
