1942 October's long fine spell gone - now cold and windy. Ironed, mended some, baked white bread; dug 6 gal. jar of carrots, bushel of cabbages, potted parsley and borage. Shoulders ached so bad until I roasted them all eve with new electric pad. 1943 Wrote (7). Rain from 2 AM on. I washed anyway, and dried clothes in basement. Hans went to Whitewater. Frank began storing his honey equipment in St. John's. I made U.S.O. calls on Mrs. Dickson, Liffingwell, Showers, Zing, Eldon Dahlk, Koberle, got ration book 4. 1944 49 degrees, 56 degrees. To bank and P.O. Sent Frank my photo. Weather cleared and I walked home. Made Carmin plaid princess dress from K's old skirt. Mrs. Norberg called. Finished bib for Rosemary's birthday. Cleared in P.M. 1945 75 degrees. Home all day, out in the sun both forenoon and afternoon. Cooked chicken. Wrote some letters. 1946 Wrote Kathryn. Hans worked 1/2 day for first in a mo. Labelled bunch of snaps. Got 4 letters from Signe - 1 from K - one from Aug 21 - and sent to Mukden. We read and napped after lunch then after tea we went to Hotel de Pekin and bought 3 Chinese dolls, and a doz Christmas cards. To Harting's on Legation St and home by ricksha. Hans' best day for a month or so.
