1942 Cold. Ironed, baked cookies, Packed box of cookies, Hans' overcoat, etc. and sent it express from Madison to Bridgeton, N.J. No coffee or chocolate in the market. Library board Comm. Mtg. I called - got Mrs. Nicholas for chm. 1943 Read half of Willkie's "Our World". Hilda and I went to House in P.M. Grace K came and sat beside us! At Hans' office, then to Sholl's Cafeteria, then to Cotton's. Called on Fr Hanson. At Cotton's overnight. 1944 Rainy, for FDR's homecoming after election to 4th term. Hans' mother and I here all day, she making fine progress on Hilda's rug. I finished one doily, started another. Read 4 chapters of German with Grandma's help. 1945 47 degrees, 62 degrees Turned raw and chilly. Awake mostly from 2:30. Worked at Canteen 6-11. Saw Halifax, Atlee, etc - met Hans in Ag. library, on bus to Jo and Kenneth Koch's for fine chicken dinner. Slow going. Rainy in eve. Letter from Sig, she was to leave Karachi Nov. 4. Typed dansk letter to Marie Greisen, MTT. 1946 36 degrees, 67.5 degrees. A beautiful day! We had Mrs. Christensen take our pictures in pedicabs. Then we went [illegible] for 2-1/2 hrs. Saw a naked child in wading - a 1/2 naked man chopping ground. Made out Christmas card list - more than 100 and wrote first 3.
