Clara Steen Skott diary, 1942-1946

December 21

1942  Sunny, hung pajamas outside but it was cold. Mailed big pkg. to Iowa, made cranberry relish, fringe-whipped blue napkin, last of Adeles set. Finished "In This Our Life".

1943  Thru ironing before 8 AM. Took nap, made strawberry shortcake, washed some windows. Frank took me to Mrs. DuFrenne's where I made 80 surgical dressings. Walked home. Colder. Began reading "The Forest and the Fort".

1944  Awake from 3:30 on - pain and gas - We washed - clothes did not freeze - grandma burned out the iron. Sgt. came again, was here for lunch. I helped him pack 2 boxes for Signe. Slept 1-1/2 hrs. Hilda here for supper. Not able to go to Fr Hanskin's.

1945  19 deg.  Sunny but breezy. I washed spread, rug, etc. Hanging inside. Baked raisin bread, did more cleaning. Mrs. Berridge called on an errand. Finished writing our 96th Christmas greeting. Wrote MTT.

1946  33 deg - 40 deg.  Christmas decorations up in New Asia d.r. - Mended, typed more scrapbook pages, wrote Sig birthday nonsense verses. Ate supper with "Windy" Stover of Conn.  Heat again after 2 days without.
