Clara Steen Skott diary, 1942-1946

December 23

1942  Bad indigestion from 2 bites waffle. Took Frank to Verona to hitchike to Iowa. Juanita helped clean all a.m. After lunch I wrote Hans then J and I helped fill candy bags at Olson's. S.S. program at church in eve.

1943  -5 deg.  Washed Frank's white unionalls, his rug and spread and dining room curtains and ironed them. Took naps. Wrote Sig. in dansk. [illegible] til Hans. Had no way to go to Christmas program at church.

1944  Telegram from Frank, he can't come till Jan 19. Baked bread and Danish pastry. To Alex. bank and A.M. Discovered the open-air market and bought hemlock wreath and liver. Hans' mother and I cleaned up the house. More cards - 2 mail deliveries again. Wrote M.T.T.  To P.O. by bus in P.M.  Wrote (7).

1945  Hilda and Marie slept at McIntyre's. Girls went to Washington to church. Hans and I drove to Alex. to church. 2 mail deliveries daily now - even today. Girls visited Rose Whitehouse in P.M. and went to Union Church in eve. Had capon for dinner Sig got at farmers' market.

1946  Walked on Nanking Road but could find no nice Christmas decorations. Supper with "Tiny" Gulranssen of Oslo. lunch with whole Yellow River project group.
