December 31 1942. Got 2 telegrams- Amy Gerling + Uncle Chris. Baked bread. Shopped in Middleton. Wayne W brot Hans from their home. Phoned Olga. Signe + Uncle Chris came out. Hans wants me in Washington. 1943. Slept till 8:15 after Frank went to work. Did some extra dusting. Adele called at noon [illegible] Frank to meet them at Sauk City to go to Iowa with them. I took him to Chanticleer, where he got on a Greyhound bus. Kathryn skated home across Lake Mendota. Mrs. Buss brought us a dressed rabbit. Read 10 pages dansk. 57° 1944. Hans + I drove to church. Sloppy. Read dansk + German + English! Snow + ice disappeared. 1945. Baked bread. Signe + I put up sandwiches + fruit cake for lunch enroute- for herself, Hilda, Kathryn, Marie + Dan, who left in pouring rain for Madison at 10. Rain stopped not long after. Hans got 2 tires for car, on permit from ration board- tho rationing is off tomorrow. Burton Baker came, to offer Hans temporary work. He has been unemployed 4 mo. We spent eve in McIntyre's apt- 517. 1946 Got some stickers and finished up several pages in Scenic China and street scenes scrapbooks. Walked past Sun Ya restaurant on Nanking Road + finally found yarn (blue) for doing needlepoint. "Chaiwan" noise worse + more of it than usual- also New Year celebrants in New Asia hotel corridors.
