July 7 1948 First time all alone for some years. Did big washing, thru by 10:30. Mrs. Neumann and 4 Girl Scouts mended lib. books. Ruth Close forgot, so I read stories to 13 at Story Time. Mrs. Jacobs brought 4 boxes books - a busy day. Watered lawn as usual. 1949 Off Newfoundland coast. So cold I wore sweater and jacket when on deck. Worked on petit point. Went to "library" at 4. Not many English books. Read in "In Search of S. Africa" by an Eng. author, H.V. Morton. 100 or more Finns on board. 1950 Froze 12 pkg. strawberries and made 15 pt. jam. Drove to Madison with Kathryn 10:30 - 12. In eve called on Jo Davis then Hans and I went to adult SS class planning meeting at Hofsteds. 1951 Baked bread. At 10 till 11, Uncle Chris, Lorraine, Emmett, their Judy and Mr. Ducket came. Had chicken on! Made apple crisp, fixed peas, etc. They left for maq. Very warm in PM. Read in eve. 1952 Up at 4 to get breakfast. Whitson's left at 4:45, taking Kathryn to go to Maquoketo. I washed, did OPS report in PM, working 2 hrs. Picked peas and beans. Typed book report on "A Daughter of Him". Back yard call on E. Kromely, home after vacation and on Anna May.
