August 11 1948 Hot. Spent most of forenoon discussing my year's outline of work with Prin. Scott. In PM drove out to see Norma Duhr, Pat Radell and Betty Salmon. As Mrs. Scott is away this week, had Mr. and Bob and Burton up to supper. 1949 Up early at Reichshof Hotel, Hamburg, to take 5:40 train to Berlin, but went bump into Iron Curtain at Helmstedt, where we spent several hours. Saw more Flichtlinge. Am. and Br. soldiers. Changed at Beba, dinner in hotel. Taxi from Hersfeldt to Rotensee, village of 50 families. Getting acquainted with Marie Radtke, Hans' mother's cousin, Elfrieda and Erika Penschuh. 1950 48 degrees in morning! (Frozen) Iowa dewberries for breakfast. I made rhubarb and raisin pies, then K and I and Teeples went fishing but got only 1 small (I none). Wrote 7, took nap, took Mr. Vold to Centurea to take train to St. Paul. Nice day, but ate in house. We played "Balsam Lake 500" in eve. Hans had to go to bed early. 1951 Canned 7-1/2 gl. peaches. To garden at 5 for corn and carrots. Read in "Bishop's Mantle" by Agnes Sligh Turnbull. 1952 Hilda and I picked up Mrs. Devins at 8:30 and Mrs. Bernath before 9 and drove to Enumclaw where we went thru big Weyerhauser sawmill - picnic in Federation Nat'l Forest. Drove on around Mt. Ranier, over Chinook Pass, 175 miles in all.
