August 12 1948 Too much pop drinking after 10 last eve with Leon Mitchell gave me a bad night and a bum day. Worked on film selection and detailed daily lesson plans. Papers for adult class coming in. Visited Marie Oleson and at Delbert Miller's with Hans. 1949 who live in former schoolhouse, inconvenient as can be. Speak German, of course. Dan, Agnes and Ernst Kniep and daughters Leonora, Lieselotte, Ursula and Ilsa. Stroll thru crooked cobbled streets. See women bring cart of bread from village Backhaus, haul out manure with cows. Talkfest each eve late. 1950 The 7 of us drove in our car to see cannery and lumber mills at Mill town, milk drying plant at Luck, Indians at Danbury (took pictures), plenty of lakes. Had picnic lunch at Lewis. Hans got sick and Paul and I drove home. Kathryn's first time in Minn. We bought Minn. blueberries - Lexington Rummy - I wound up in the hole! 1951 Awake from 5. Baked choc. chip pie. Signe (just home from Columbia Univ.) here from 9:30. K and I to church. Played Canasta with girls but no luck. Hilda phoned at noon. Going to Colo 2 weeks. Frank back to Rockford after 2 weeks here. 1952 Hilda and I left Tacoma at 9 and drove south in hot sun and wind 250 miles plus. Saw capitols at Olympia and Salem. Tried to find Irene Wood in Portland - not home. To Anna and Frank's by 5. John Steen over for supper too. Nancy Pratt, 13 there.
