August 16 1948 Slept nearly 8 hrs straight. Drove 272 miles to D.C. from 6:30 to 4:30. Unloaded our trailer at Grace Kirkpatrick's in Arlington. I drove over 4 Blue Ridges - Backbone 3095 ft. To Fred Rossiter's to "park" for 3 days. Daisy served supper on the porch. 1949 Up earlier than usual. Breakfast and farewells. With taxi man to Hersfeld. Missed 1st train 15". Elfrieda and we walked, ate ice, visited creamery, sat in sun. Alfred came. Train crowded to Hannover, Ruins. Shopped - got hairdo and (button?). Stayed at Zur Post Hotel. Looked out window, saw gutted ruins of rest of hotel. 1950 94 degrees Did my ironing between 7 and 8 on Vold's porch. Wrote letters. Walked down town before it got too hot. Above 90 degrees. Hans working in Siren for 3 "d last day. Mrs. Gaylord, Kathleen and Gretchen called. Hard rainstorm in eve, hail. I won in Lex. Rummy! Read in Kristin (illegible). 1951 Sig and Marian Dunn brought us corn, beans, tomatoes. Up at 5. Canned 7 qt. peaches. Went to Madison with Mr. and Mrs. John Kruse, then Gusta and I went to State Fairgrounds with Mrs. Christiansen and Mrs. Lease. We helped set up Dove Co. Homemakers booth. Home on (illegible). 1952 Up 8:30. Hilda made more blackberry jelly. I helped Anna with bread baking, mended a tablecloth. John in eve for final visit.
