JANUARY 26 1917. -5°. Papa and I went on fast mail, he to Eldora via Grinnell, I to Iowa City. I took George primroses for the Grange. Train nearly 2 hrs. late coming back. Took a treatment, then brought Helen home after school. 1918. -26° at 9 o'clock, after it wasn't so cold. Baked doughnuts, and we dried pans of potatoes and carrots. Took out our Christmas tree. Sewed on silk guimpe. Letter from Hans, hard at work, but where it "felt like spring, and snow nearly gone"! Constance taught me to play "Casino" in evening. 1919. Up at 9:30. I wrote home, baked bread - sponge cake. Edna P. here for some dictation, staying for supper. Mr. Denison also here, and Margaret back. Hans left on the 7:38 train for the annual Co. Agents' conference at Brookings. 1920. Hans went back to Maquoketa on 10:40 train. Mamma went to town, too, when Leslie took him up. I fixed silk bottom and straps on crocheted top of camisole, and finished machine work on Hans' white shirt. At part at Horace Klotz' as farewell for them and Charlie's. Chicken supper. Big crowd. 1921. I started crocheting pink nightingale. Dinner at 2 for Hans Fuglsang and Mr. Warren who helped Hans butcher two hogs. Ideal butchering weather at last, after warm spell. I made large bed-pad and one for Hilda. Oscar stayed over night to haul our milk. Letter from mamma, and Hans had one from Mark Keith who has been in Hawaii.
