March 19 1917. Beautiful spring-like day. I helped wash, went after mail, and started to crochet a firmer edge on my round tablecloth. Also started to write the long-promised "Hillside story." (Should be on next page, 20 Mch). 1918. Up to 80°. Baked a pie- tho cool briquettes don't make the fire that tamarack did! Finally Cushman supplied us with house keys. washed 4 windows, put up curtains, straightened more in bedroom, cupboards, etc. Helped Nelson take off 800 ears corn at hotel. Hans had supper in country. 1919. Warm and sunny- we didn't have or need a bit of furnace fire. Wrote in circle letter and to Hazel. August here for dinner and hauled manure for garden and hotbed. I crocheted and embroidered. Was at Gallup's a while in morning. 1920. Some more snow in morning. Nasty sloppy to get around. Swept a little more than usual, sorted box of old letters, made big cotton pad for Hilda's bed. Adela came soon after 4, in time to get supper. 1921. Adela helped all day. Shortened house cleaning- did the small room upstairs and I made lilac curtains for it. I made 3 pies, nearly finished Signe's yarn hood. Signe would not sleep til after 1:00A.M.
