April 27 1917. We got home about 1:00 A.M. Papa is greatly stirred up about the war. Ferdinand has left, too. I spent the forenoon putting "machine couching" on Helen's new dress. Mended, napped, etc. At Grange I was ahead in points for tonight. "Everybody Dig In" the ice cream and cake. 1918. Made the third blue dress for Beatrice, mended, made one good petticoat from two worn black ones. Helped Hans select four bushels to test for seed for his father from Carl Nielson's crib of corn. Nielson's made us stay for dinner. Rained in P.M. Letter from Murl Elijah. 1919. Had our first lettuce from hotbed for dinner. Hilda had her first Ford ride- out to J.T. Olson's. She cried while there. We stayed for coffee. It was also her first time out of the house. She stayed with Hans in eve, and slept, while Amanda and I went to church. 1920. Still rainy, but I washed. Baked cream cake. Took short nap; I was so tired. Got card from mamma. Cousin Millie has her third little girl. 1921. Lost four very small chicks (drowned). Made 2 never-fail cakes - one for Equity meeting at Man's in eve. Hans + Adela went. I made + put up lace over-curtains for small room upstairs. We had the chicks in garage all day. Cold wind.
