JUNE 9 1917. We "canned" our tomato plants to protect them from hot sun. We went in the school Ford to our summer home in the country, and established "camp". We came in again to water sweet corn on school farm, etc. Ate picnic supper on school farm. Got back rather late. 1918. A very warm day. Heard good sermon by Dr. Thoms of the Univ. at church. Hans and I spent P.M. at Prof. Manthey's, who lost his place at the Univ. teaching German and contemplates farming in Minn. We cultivated part of our small garden in eve. 1919. Took till 10 to get clutch repaired. Hawkeye Highway worse all the time to Webster City - torn up by army trucks. Showery. We went north to Eagle Grove. which we finally made by help of a friendly Buick. Stayed over night with Aunt Hattie [hill bridge?] and Blanche. 1920. Finished a big washing before eleven. Constance able to help usual amount again. Her birthday. We sewed in PM. Hot. In evening we went to Hans Fuglsang's. 1921. Had first peas. a whole quart, as Oscar is helping us cultivate corn, and the family is large.
