June 24 1917. A nice Sunday, but we did not get up enough ambition to walk to town in mud. After dinner we read in a Norsk primer, napped, took walk in rye field, our timber, and in adjoining ones, past two deserted homesteader's shacks. Called on Steindle's. 1918. Sultry until P.M. I canned 2 qt. of beet pickles, baked oatmeal cookies and quick bread. Went to Red Cross rooms and made all of a hospital shirt in P.M. It rained hard while I was there. We were glad to have rain, to lay the dust and help gardens. 1919. Got washing done by 2:00 P.M. and was delayed because main bearing wasn't greased. Walked to big garden again with Hilda and hoed an hour. Some little girls near by cared for Hilda. She went to sleep by 10:30 for once. Hot. 1920. Baked gooseberry pie, wrote to folks. After dinner went to Ehlers'. Mrs. Ehlers died suddenly at four this morning leaving 9 children at home, and 2 away. 1921. Still hot and dry. canned 2 qt. peas, did more mending. Rev. Snyder's came out to see milk machine in evening.
