July 1 1917. A misty rain in the forenoon. Hans and I walked to Ole's for milk. Ate first vegetables from "our own garden" (in town) - lettuce, onions, and radishes. We took the school car and Hans' trunk to town. I drove the Ford part way in - my first attempt. We walked home the west road. 1918. We were tired from our trip. I painted 3 tomato frames, typed 2 canning kitchen stories & took them downtown. Hans took pictures in garden. Sweet corn much taller than I. I cut out waist of lavender + white stripes & plain white (all old material). Helped clean mud of trip from Ford & polished it. Mrs. Tjaden went with us to our garden. 1919. Canned 4 more pts. peas. Baked oatmeal bread & jam cake in P.M. Letter from mamma. Leslie & papa have bought a dodge car. Finished a letter to Constance. We put Hilda to sleep by a 20 min. Ford ride at bedtime. So hot & windy & dusty. 1920. Canned 3 qt beans. Aunt Martha Ehlers & Virginia came with Hans on wagon in morning. They walked to field with me in P.M. Then I helped Hans hoe in truck patch. Wrote to mamma. 1921. Canned 2 qt. peas & of beans. Baked biscuit and mince pies. Hans' father & Oscar are helping with harvest. I took Hans' supper to field to him. I have a spell of indigestion or something that is prevalent now.
