JULY 4 1917, Our patriotic efforts were expended in killing quack grass from the potato patch and weeds in the school garden. Got another meat fork, from Mr and Mrs Jensen, and aluminum saucepan from Florence. Hans and I drove half way to Leonard in evening, thru cleared burned-over, and standing timber tracts, and some farms. A quiet day - no fire crackers in S.D. 1918. Rainy all afternoon - so we did not go to the Dalesbury picnic. Felt bum till evening when I helped in garden. We stayed with Lowell and Eleanor while their folks were out in the evening. I wrote to Adela, and Helena (with August in Minnesota). Letter from Constance, in N. Dakota. 1919. Cleaned up dusty house, as nice rain laid the dust. Mr. Haines here in P.M. He went with us and helped pick 2 gal. wild gooseberries in Ole Bottolfson's pasture in evening. Got and wrote in circle letter. 1920. Papa, mamma, Leslie and Helen arrived at 7:00 A.M. in their Dodge, just as breakfast was ready. I dressed 4 young chickens and fried for dinner, baked 3 pumpkin pies. 17 here for dinner, served cafeteria style. Olga brought cake, etc. August, home from Dakota, Helena, Adela and folks here. Herbert, Fritz, Edna and Walter Ehlers from Oelwein here, dropped in for late dinner. We all went to Lafe Scott's where Helen sang for audience of 38. She and Leslie went home. Folks and we drove to Maquoketa in eve. 1921. Celebrated by putting up bunting on front porch, and sending Minnie and Alfred to the big celebration in Maquoketa (not together!) We intended going to see fireworks in eve, but got work done too late. Hans cuts oats all day, Oscar shucking. I took nap.
