JULY 5 1917. Hans came out to work early. I hoed the beans, then came too. Took shelter from a shower under a pine. Reached camp about ten. Anna Wilson sent me box of stationery and two linen tea towels. Wrote some "thank-you" letters. Hans and I went to Carlson's in evening for eggs, and to Ole's for milk. Showered. 1918. We gathered up a lot of garden stuff, and I spent the day in the new venture, a community canning kitchen, in the high school. Only 3 women came - spectators. I canned, in my new canner, 12 qts. Swiss chard, 5 of beets 3 qts. kohlrabi, 1 of beans, and 2 of 5 vegetables mixed (for soups) 1919. Amanda here all day. We canned 2 qt. each of peas and beans. I baked bread. We did a washing in evening. Mrs. Varnum here all afternoon. Hans planted stringless string beans where he cleared out early peas. 1920. Constance sick abed all day. Mamma helped me can 5 qt. cherries she brought me. She and papa went home on 2:20 train from Elwood. Hans took them to train. Very muddy. I finished last week's mending. 1921. We did a large washing, all done by 11:15. I cranked engine, as Hans went out about 3:00 A.M. to bind. Sent his meals out to field. I took lunch once. We finished our oats harvest. I cut out white voile dress for Hilda..
