July 23 1917. Had acute indigestion in the night, and was too weak to do anything all day. Hans has finished his carpenter work, and hoed our garden all P.M. while I lay in the shade beside the garden, napping and trying to keep cool. 1918. Mamma and I did a large washing. I baked apple pie. Worked on my spread some on porch, but it was too hot. Letter from Herman, first I got from him in Vermillion, that he may enlist later. Tjaden's went to Pickerel Lake, leaving quiet neighborhood. Helped put on Ford shock absorbers. 1919. Again Hilda did not sleep in forenoon. I canned 1 qt Kentucky Wonder beans and 1 1.2 qt "Yum-Yum" pickles. Made loaf peanut bread, washed hair again. Letter from Herman. Chesty brought us sweet corn to eat. Wrote to Herman. 1920. Made Hilda's striped gray gingham apron, and cut out big checked one for myself. Over to folks' a few minutes in evening.
