1917-1921 - 07-27

JULY 27
1917. I hoed kohlrabi and bean ridges, canned 1 1/2 qts. currants (from Hanson's), made currant pie. Helen wrote, Leslie and Herman are also away down the draft list. Cousin Frank is also. Hottest yet. We watered sweet corn again. Everything is dry. Planted Swiss chard.
1918. Canned 2 qt. snap beans, 2 of sweet corn, and 1 of kohlrabi. 2 pt. peas spoiled, also 2 qt. Kohlrabi so far. Steamed brown bread. Cleaned up house. We went to town in Ford a couple times in evening, also to big garden. Letter from Constance. Sent double boiler for belated wedding gift to Henry and Margaret Schneider.
1919. Hans and I went to union church services at Methodist church. Rev. Gagnier preached. Hot & windy & dusty. We took Amanda out to Nels Benson's, where she will work another week. Letter from Gail in Sioux City, also one from mamma, that big barn, windmill, corn crib and milk barn burned.
1920. Washing done soon after ten. Letter from mamma.  Jim is all in - summer grip. Oscar and his father came to shuck oats.
1921. Did the mending. Made a pair of unbleached pillowcases, sewing crocheted insertion in one.
