JULY 30 1917. Did a two week's washing. Ate our first string beans. Did a little more straightening up. I tried to learn swimming, and can float alone for a short time. Pumped 50 buckets of water for beans. Picked peas in school garden. 1918. Again we got up at 2:30, and took mamma to the 3:05 train, which was only hallf hour late this time. Then we slept till 8. Washed in basement, finishing at 1:00. Mopped, wrote to Aunt Emma, shortened white poplin skirt. Hans not home for dinner, and came late for supper. 1919. Wrote to mamma, offering to come down this fall. Letter from sis - first all summer. Did half my ironing before breakfast. Canned 8 qts. corn in wash boiler, Hans getting me rack for it. Baked peanut cake. 1920. Canned 3 old hens I culled out, making 5 qt. & 1 qt. soup. Mended 1921. Baked cake, bread, etc.
