AUGUST 5 1917. Went to garden for string beans etc. Rev. Dale preached his best sermon yet, on "The Christian's Attitude Towards the War". We went walking on Clearbrook road, then had auto ride with Stenwick's on Jefferson Highway nearly to Shevlin. Wrote letters to Elva, Mary N. & Sis. 1918. Hans and I brought in a bushel or so of sweet corn from our big garden. I canned 8 qts of it, also 2 of tomatoes and 1 pt. onion pickles. I wrote to Aunt Minnie. Hans was gone from 11:00 A.M. It was the first night I ever stayed all alone, but I didn't mind it. 1919. Hans went to Sioux City on early train, and I started boiler. Amanda and I got a huge washing all done by ten. Wrote to Aunt Minnie. Had first lima beans. We finished her kimono and I cut out light dotted calico dress for her and we got it seamed up. I went to town in P.M. Got circle letter. 1920. Threshers got through at Lafe Scott's and began here at 5 P.M. I had to mend a bunch of sacks for oats. Mrs. Scott sent me her beef roast, nearly done, also Vashti to help, extra chairs, etc. Hans got his mother's dining table to use. Fed 19 men for supper. I made strawberry tapioca, had corn, beets, cabbage etc. Adela here also. Constance not able to help. 19
