AUGUST 6 1917. We got up at 4:30 to fight the heavy frost on beans, tomatoes, and pumpkins, with 6 bonfires and much water. Pulled some thru. Mended Han's trousers. pressed marquisette dress, started a bib, picked peas, etc. in school garden, hoed east of house in garden. Have begun making tomato frames. 1918. Up early and went to town before it got hot. Could only get 1 pound sugar, and brown at that, just 1/4 our August allotment. Wrote to mamma and Constance. Canned 2 qt. succotash and 1 of mixed vegetables. Remodeled somewhat my white crepe voile dress and made most of a blue cheviot dress for French war relief. 1919. Hot. Amanda and I did huge ironing, canned 8 qt. tomatoes, sewed on her dress etc. I baked biscuit and oatmeal cookies, pressed 2 pr. trousers for Hans, etc. Mamma wrote me all about their fire, and that I may keep house at Elmenhurst next winter while they go to California. 1920. Shower in night delayed starting till 9. For dinner I baked 5 pumpkin pies & roast beef Hazel Warren was going to have. After dinner dishes were done Adela and I went to Maquoketa to get meat for her, then helped her over supper time. Mrs. Scott and Sara and Hazel and Adela helped me. Letter from Anna Wilson. 1921. Baked oatmeal cookies, packed etc. After dinner I drove to Otto Weiderman's and got his Ford truck. We had to push it clear to field to get it started. We left here at 5, got to West Liberty at 9:30. Delayed 1 1/2 hours by car trouble. George and Mary had gone to bed.
