AUGUST 20 1917. Had first letter from Hans' mother. We spent most of forenoon in school garden - picked peas, radishes, lettuce, hoed young onions; after dinner we watered sweet corn. Went swimming. Mrs. John Hanson came in forenoon to invite us to reception. Crocheted, in shade of pines. 1918. Canned 1 qt. elderberries we got last night. Baked oatmeal bread, hermits and pumpkin and elderberry pie. Cleaned up house. Han's mother finished hemming my napkins while I worked on spread. We walked to town in P.M. Two Hans' at Wakonda. 1919. Hans got a bushel of apples at Tompkins, and I used them all - canned 12 qt. sauce, 3 1/2 apple butter, and nearly a qt. jelly. Also canned 2 qt. tomato, making more than 18 qt. today. In evening we went to watch the first pavement dance, in front of courthouse. Stayed till nearly 12. 1920. Baked bread and canned 5 qt. sweet apple pickles. Adele, Euphemia, and I went to Warren's, & practised some S.S. songs. It rained while we were there. Hilda's teeth made her fretful. I did just a little of the mending and sweeping. Wrote to Florence. 1921. Baked buns and little chocolate cakes. Helped Hans chase pigs in silage corn etc. most of forenoon. Sold last setting eggs.
