August 28 1917. Made denim cushion for Morris chair back. Mended 2 pair trousers. Went to Red Cross meeting in schoolhouse and helped sew, on washcloths and nightingales. Was put on committee to put things away. Hans and I went to farm for cucumbers. Covered them, also tomatoes & pumpkins, & built smudge fires but it froze. 1918. Spent forenoon in coming kitchen supervising & helping girls can 34 qt. tomatoes for Mrs. Fox. Letters from Helen & Sis. Wrote to Constance. Ironed. Hans and I picked lima beans in evening. 1919. Letters from Aunt Minnie and one from Herman to folks that he will be in Washington D.C. again. We canned 7 qts. tomatoes. I baked bread, helped Amanda finish her gingham dress & started on blue and plain gingham one for myself. 1920. Busy all day- canned 1 qt. pickles, cleaned the two bedrooms, mopped 3 rooms, painted spare room bed Vernie Martin finish. Another card from Cousin Emma. Hilda and I got our new shoes from Philipsbom. 1921. Busy Sunday. We made a cheese, propped up peach trees; after dinner we went to Pete Kiev for block & tackle to hoist our broken pump. It took Hans and his father till 5:30 to repair it. Our chores kept us busy till nearly 8 - too late for church.
