AUGUST 30 1917. Baked chocolate cake - from a good recipe this time. Made curtains for front window and bedroom, finishing up the bolt of voile. Supt. O. B. Anderson was here for dinner. Spoke highly of our "lay-out". Hans and I picked pine needles for two hours in evening. 1918. Cool enough to shut windows. I canned 2 qts. plums and 3 of plum-apple butter and 1 bottle apple juice in A.M. In P.M. I supervised 4 girls canning corn and yellow tomatoes. Big job, finishing 347's qts. canned in community canning kitchen this summer. We're all glad to be thru there. 1919. Amanda and I baked bread, pie, and cake, did some washing and cleaning, baked beans, etc. In P.M. I helped my girls with their last practice demonstration. Met Helen Horsfall, an Ames girl, new H. Ec. teacher here. Mark Keith broke his leg - hard luck for him and us too. Amanda registered in H. Ec. course at high school. 1920. Thru washing by 11. Olga and Helena brought August here, just arrived from Dakota. He, Hans, Adela, Oscar, Hilda, and I went to Maquoketa. Got Hilda's haircut, and a high chair for her. Mailed card to cousin Emma. Got circle letter. 1921. Very hot spell now. Signe has little watery heat-blisters. We got ironing done before dinner once. Last time without any men for dinner for a while. We took Minnie to town in eve, for 3 day.' off at the fair. Rained on us. Got a summer cold.
