SEPTEMBER 8
1917. Mopped, baked white and rye bread and little chocolate cakes. It rained, but we four and Messrs. Halverson and Storwell went in ford to farm. Picnic supper in woodshed - roasted potatoes and frankfurters in "bachelor stove", drove south thru deep woods.
1918. Baked a couple pumpkin pies. We went to Methodist church. Very windy and dusty. I read "Under Fire" a war novel by Roi Cooper Megrue. Helped Hans mend holes in rear ford tires.
1919. We all board at the camp mess hall on State Fair grounds. Hans stays at Boys' Camp. Our team drew for place No. 9 for canning fair exhibits. Saw Ag. Hall, etc. Went back to dorm. right after supper.
1920. Cousin Emma and I worked with plums all A.M. Canned 8 qt., 2 qt of juice, and 5 glasses of jelly. Made 2 buttermilk pies. We planned to go to Maquoketa in P.M. but it looked like rain, and we stayed home - and it didn't rain! Sewed a little, slept an hour.
1921. We filled silo all day. Amanda helped Minnie and me. 16 men for dinner, 13 for supper. Baked pumpkin pies, buns, roasted beef, etc.
