SEPTEMBER 29 1917. I cleaned up the house and did a big washing, tho it was very windy. We went to J. G. Knox' west of town, and bought his 5 acres of corn fodder for cow feed. We stayed for supper. Had new vegetable, Chinese or celery cabbage. We got Swiss chard and winter radishes. 1918. After packing lunch, etc. went to Peterson's for confab with Edna; had coffee there, and left Vermillion at 11:37 A.M. Went 20 miles east, crossing into Iowa at Westfield. Ate picnic dinner in [east?] end of Plymouth Co. Followed Hawkeye Highway thru Cherokee, near Jewell. [Illegible] Lake, Ft. Dodge, Webster City. Stayed all night with Helena at R.J. Wilsons 1919. Another gray day, with alternating sunshine and rain - sometimes both at once. Canned 2 qt. tomato, cut out Hilda cream wool dress with rosebuds, ironed and mended. Hilda is getting speedy at turning over on the floor. Started to wash, but wrong oil made me quit after 1 washerful. 1920. As cold as it can be without frost. Hilda didn't like to stay in very long, but the wind was too cold and raw. I picked a bucket each of peaches and grapes, canned 1 1/2 qt. peach butter, and got the grapes ready for jam. Letter from Helen at Evanston. 19
