October 7 1917. So cold the tops of rutabagas finally froze. I wrote circle letter and bunch of cards, and to Richard Peterson. 1918. Florence fed us regular chicken dinner for breakfast. Took brief ride around college. Waited for inner tubes to be mended, not leaving Ames till 12:15. Picnic dinner near Boone River. Rode on Hawkeye Highway to Le Mars, last part in mud and rain. 1919. Hilda slept all night long for first time in several weeks. Another fine day. I nearly finished Hilda's embroidered dress, cut out brown soisette shirt for Hans. Cooked a lot of huckleberry-rhubarb sauce. 1920. Made 6 bottles tomato catsup from tomatoes I got at John Ehlers'. Dressed a chicken. Washed spareroom curtains, a rug, army blanket, + 2 sweaters. Finished another pair panties- top band and 5 buttonholes. Went to concert in Elwood- Miss Schwarz and Miss Sipher. Hilda stayed home asleep, with Harry. 19
