October 11 1917. A snowy, windy, cold day--very bad in forenoon. I made my "birthday cake". Papa is sending me a barrel of apples and Sis will send some dried fruit, etc. Got cards from Aunt Minnie, mamma, Jo, Martha. Hans bought our lecture course tickets. (and is to order Pyrex casserole for my birthday. 1918. Foggy all forenoon but beautiful and sunny in P.M. Did a 2 1/2 wks. washing by 3:00 P.M. including August's clothes. (132 pieces) Started a comfort kit for a soldier at Rees', where several of us worked together. Mrs. Rees served tea. Hans home late from Wakonda. I had my first frosted cake for many months. [for my 30th birthday, Hans is to get me Pyrex pie dish-but we're broke now. 1919. 31 kisses before I got up! Heavy freeze again. While Amanda washed, I baked bread and sponge cake. Scrubbed kitchen, dressed a chicken that strayed into our garage. Picked up bushel of walnuts in our backyard. Amanda baked me a birthday cake with candles. Hans got me patent shoe brush. Card from mamma. Letter from Helen. August here for supper. Downtown in eve. Hilda weighs 18 1/4 lb. 1920. My gold band ring came Hans got for me. A busy day. I fried down sausage, mopped, baked a plain cake, and washed Hilda and her clothes when she got in a lot of dirt and water-and put her to bed in her nightie. Whitney's here in P.M. Mrs. W. and I made buttonholes in two panties. Letter from Helen. 1921. Hans finally got his wood rack done he has been working on in Nashville and brought it home "for my birthday". Sis sent me hdkf., also some patterns I wanted.
