October 17 1917. A gray, rainy day, turning to snow after supper. I baked a cake, mended up some winter duds - now becoming necessary to have. Wrote to Anna Wilson. Margaret went to wedding at Grand Forks. 1918. The air is murky, due to the terrible forest fires in Minnesota. I cleaned our bedroom, rearranging the furniture for winter. Baked pumpkin pie. Went to Over's to tell them I can't accept a S.S. class. Wrote to "Mac" and Amanda. Started making Christmas things, crocheting a doily. Hans and I harvested 2 1/2 bu. potatoes. 1919. Baked bread. Washed three storm windows. Turned hose on windows to clean them quickly on outside. Made most of a blue crochet edge hdkf for Amanda's birthday. Mrs. Alen called. Miss Horsfall and I went to see new H. Ec. equipment at the Univ. Hans out at Garfield all night. Fine day. 1920. Nice mild day. Wrote to Amanda and Hazel Grimes, and cards to Cousin Emma and Lottie Hunter. Hans' folks drove here in their old Ford in P.M. Hans and I drove Jane to church in evening. Nearly 50 there. Not quite as late as last time, but it's hard to get around by 7:30. 1921. Minnie's coming back last night makes it much easier, especially at chore time. I feed pig (Ground Cherry), young heifers, feed and milk Etta, the sick cow, and feed Babe and Pete, the two young calves, besides chickens, of course.
