November 28 1917. Sunny again. Baked white and rye bread, an extra mince pie for the bachelors' Thanksgiving (Mr. Erickson next door), churned 1/2 lb. of butter, washed a little, mopped pantry, finished hemstitching my tablecloth. Margaret and Carita quit here, on one day's notice. 1918. Thanksgiving Day- everybody thankful war is over. Nice day. I baked pies, boiled silverware, etc. Margaret and Bernice begin boarding here. Only Margaret ate dinner with us: roast chicken, Scotch dressing, stuffed potatoes, gravy, Whitney crab pickles, creamed peas, mince and pumpkin pie, with whipped cream. Practically all a "South Dakota dinner" as Food Administrator requested. White bread (Minn.) + Yankton butter. August in in eve. 1919. Hans home all day, packing. Amanda here, helping. She and I packed two barrels of fruit jars, and vegetables. 1920. Another day that did not seem like Sunday. Sunny for first time in about a week. Baked a "never fail" cake, washed my hair Olga, Orville, and Adela here little while. 19
