DECEMBER 29 1917. The coldest I ever saw, -48°, but sun soon raised it to about 0°. Mr. Baker brought us tamarack to burn - fine to keep fires. I baked oatmeal cookies Helped Hans make out his draft questionnaire, placing him in class IV. Took shower bath. Worked in Chem. Read. 1918. Another fine day. Hans and August went out to look at Pifer place, as we can't seem to get a farm in Iowa. Took picture of Christmas tree. Letter from Otto and Alvina Weidemann, August went out to Lovejoy's to husk. We started out to Denison's, met them coming in to take train to Colorado. They were all here for supper. 1919. Feel fine again. Worked on my apron, embroidered on Helen's collar. Got set of three hot-dish mats with crocheted covers from Edith B., candy from Mary Nelson, and letter from Constance. Ray Oxley came to help George build new barn. 1920. Baked four pumpkin pies, blacked front room stove Hans and Harry finally put up: Olga and Orville brought Amanda here and Adela and Helena home; Amanda cleaned up front room for me; I made peanut brittle. Miss Hunter here for milk, etc. 19
