July 16 1936. After sleeping in a tourist room in Boscobel, we watched Wis. W.P.A. milk inspection, then drove to DeSoto. Dinner at LaCrosse with [illegible] and Isenberg, of tankage factory! Stops at Mabel & Spring Grove, Minn. Chicken supper with buttermakers at Durango. 1937. So cold I stayed in Helen's apartment all day. Read Philip Gibbs' "The Golden Years", napped, entertained small Susan Jane—a neighbor girl. 1938. Only 2 qt. berries. Gathered in beets, potatoes, beans & peas from garden. Baked bread. Wrote Hans and sent him a check. 1939. Up at 5:30, picked last peas, hoed flower border, made ice cream, etc. Car wouldn't start until we got to hill so too late to teach S.S. class. Mrs. McKenzie, Ann & Kathryn here for dinner. Mrs. Lahman called. We went to Univ. concert on Lincoln terrace. Lucille here in eve. 19
