THE - -[drawing of monster] - - THING HELEN WESSON (Jersey) BURTON CRANE (Japan) Whole No. 1 2214 Palisade Avenue, Weehawken, NJ Spring 1946 The (Unspeakable) Thing is an amateur magazine published particularly for the Fantasy gang and is circulated "For Exchange" to all actifen, and by subscription (see pg 30) to lazifen. For the benefit of those bewildered by the geography of the project, it gives: Fiction Editor Crane Poetry Editor Crane Criticism Dept Crane Angel Crane Deadline Copy Editor Helen Production Dept Helen Art Dept (original & other) Helen Subscriptions & Complaints Helen NOTE: For FAPA credential - Wesson, Editor - Crane, Associate Editor - 2/22/46 THE....THING is to be a general magazine, but our own tastes dictate that it shall carry some fantasy fiction, perhaps as many as two stories to the issue. I want contributions, preferably of stories shorter than 5,000 words. Short-shorts (of 1,500 words or fewer) will be especially welcome. These should be sent direct to me.* I'll work over them with you, try to help you strengthen them, make real yarns out of them - and I shall not feel badly if, after rewriting them, you give them another try with the prozines before sending them back to me. A good fantasy story, like any other story, describes the interplay of human emotions. There must be conflict, preferably conflict between persons. Your main character must be believable and must attract reader sympathy and identification. Most good short stories contain at least 50 per cent dialogue--and the dialogue should give the effect of naturalness. It must not be natural, for natural conversation is too diffuse. Every line of dialogue should be consonant with -- and preferably develop-the character of the speaker. It should also carry forward the story. Fan fiction doesn't have much reputation in fan circles, for most of it stinks, and yet most fans try to write it for professional outlets. Let's see if we can't whip some of the best of it into shape for publication in The....Thing. I can't promise to pay, of course, but the author of each short story accapted for publication in The....Thing will be sent a prize--perhaps an Oriental objet d'art. ...CRANE BURTIE SENDS his copy and then sits back, "From now on it's your baby." Isn't that just like a man? They expend a bit of initial effort and from there on "it's your baby" and I'm left with the labor and the diapers. And these diapers are an inky mess! (So'm I!) (Hmmm, and so's my study.) But at least I have unusual excuses for the usual faults. With Crane in 1) China, 2) India, 3) Japan, since we started TUT, I've had all sorts of mail trouble, receiving his copy from Home-happy APO clerks. If this issue has a decent cover, then the Jap artist deal arrived in time. There's been a Chinese artist, then an Australian cartoonist on the same assignment. You will probably get a Helenic cover this ish. I'm not exotic, but I'm dependable. (It says here in my copy.) Calm down. You'd be a puny baby, too, if you had been diluted by the whole Pacific Ocean. ...HELEN *PRO GHQ AFPAC Adv Ech, APO 500, San Francisco. Note: Send Crane's fanzines to Weehawken c/o H. Wesson. All subs, address changes, etc. to Weehawken also. 2
