THERE IS TALK of printing a new Welcom booklet. Good! But this time how about a better-edited and more permanent job? Laney's criticisms of the last one struck me as well-taken. Why not ask him to be editor and give him time to circulate the ms. pretty thoroughly among the leaders of the association? The booklet is in the NFFF show window. Our best goods should be on display. There seems to be general agreement that the booklet should be printed. This time plans should be made to have the NFFF kick in with enough money to buy the linotype metal and hold it. The additional cost for a booklet of about 8,000 words in 8 pt. (in 20 pages with a type mass per page of about 3 x 5 inches) should not be more than $9. The metal might be held by the LA Club--which has a press. If it did not feel capable of doing the reprints, they would still be cheaper than if all new type had to be set for each. The NAPA has been doing this with its constitution for years, so I know it will work. Each time there are amendments, new metal is set and inserted and members always have at hand up-to-date copies of the constitution. ...CRANE NFFF seems to be going around circles in its quest for an official emblem or seal. Most of the entries show little imagination, much less fantasy. They resemble shoulder patches of World War II. I suggest NFFF ask its artists to interpret the two principal elements of Fantasy--Weird (death's head) and Scifiction (a rocket ship)--into an emblem simple to stencil, as the Merry Go Rounder Guild, and as representative as the AAPA seal with its printer's composing stick. But artistic, not just letters. Dropping NFFF's reiterative, mouth-filling name would help considerably. FANTASY LEAGUE has practical advantages. ...HELEN Top: NAPA [drawings of four seals] The Phoenix, United Alumni UAPA
