two of his fingers while he gesticulates and describes little circles in the air with his other hand. He's thinkin'. When he finally gets an idea, he rattles off a sentence or two and quits. The dope says he can't write when anyone else is around. So I take the hint. ...AS IF IT MATTERED - I second Doc's proposal for a reading and selecting bureau in fandom. All of the fans just can't possibly read all the stuff that is being published - and ofttimes they plow thru 2 or three mags before they find a story worth reading. Right at the present, I'm reading every bit of stf that is being published, but it won't be the same when college opens up. AMAZING is the one mag that I seldom read over one or two stories in. They just don't publish enough good stories in AMAZING but F.A. is different. It has about one good story a month, and since I've read every issue ecept the last two thru and thru, I know now who will be good and who will invariably stink. Between Joe and I, tho, we read all the stf that's being published. Therefore, we write HAMS & PROS. But returning to Doc's suggesting, why not have a special committee in the NFFF take over this work? Say, every 2 months, they could publish a list of the stories which they had chosen as those worth reading. (This idea is now under consideration by the NFFF Planning Board - ed.) ...Nyahh, nyahhhh, Koening missed a hiss! Shame, Shame, HC! It's in FUTURE, Aug. '41. Lieber Jr's "They Never Come Back": "Quick!" hissed Bart....p.41, by the way. STRANGE INTERLUDES not as interesting as last time...damon is as wacky and wonderful as ever. Sinn-yk-uhss brings up a couple of topics of outstanding interest. THE LAST MINUTE - Fer gunness sakes. by all means keep the edi-comments. They were all good for at least a snicker. (Too bad, Milty!--ed.) HE WHO WAS HATED Robert W Lowndes Yahoo! The new FANFARE nosed in just as I was finishing STATION X for my December book. (What's the matter with you Strangers that I never hear from any of you -- don't any of you have a Future?) (We hesitate to look into it. "There are Things it were best Man did not know."--ed) However, with admirable restraint I kept my nose to the job until it was done. Then the fun started. You were just in time to be reviewed in Futurian Times. (Ain't it shameless, the way I try to boost circulation!) (That's all right, pal - always glad to help a poor, struggling pro - ed) Cover: Very effective, neat and all that. The human figure wasn't quite right, tho - to my eyes. That is, he was must too graphically outlined, and thus subject to criticism. STF RECOLLECTIONS - well done, though I trust this is but the first of a series. LINES FROM THE LAST GRAVE is competently written, imagery good, but for my taste could have been much more effective if the matter had been condensed. SLAN!DER: Before picking it apart - I wonder if Gilbert realizes he is following the Miske technique of columnizing here? Not that it isn't effective, of course. Look Joe. There's nothing personal in what I'm about to say, and I'm not blaming you. ghughu knows I've rushed into print often enuf in the past with even less of a basis from which to work. But your first section, in which you say, "It was only three or four years ago that Wollheim was the most hated man in the entire fan world." is awfully silly, to say the least. Upon what do you base that statement? It necessarily
