AS IF IT MATTERED - Lowndes really went places in choosing a title like that. But too bad a nice title had to be wasted on a corny article like the one he wrote. Understand, I don't wish to be too drastic on Lowndes. He is a very important fan and so I wouldn't want to get on the bad side of his nature. I really wasn't acquainted with the fact that Bob Jones is a fan artist. Another of my astounding predictions (where was the first one?) is that Bob Jones will be another great stf artist like Krupa, Eron, or even another Scheenan. Anyhow, the cover is a work of art. By the way, you editors and columnists have the corny idea of inserting sly plugs about other fanzines: when the mag is even named, you insert in parentheses the address and price. Why not boost your own circulation? The one about the mile high waterspout is really clever. Which reminds me, Koenig's column is the best in FANFARE. There are really some amusing bits there. Koenig is a genious. No doubt about that. DEEPURPLE POOO * ** * Jack Foo Speer The cover is not startlingly good nor is the lithorepro amazingly effective. The poem is illustrates however, is worth a good 9. Notice that I refuse to adopt your rating system. We need not fear standardization in fandom - Foo knows we have all too little of it in our squirming webwork of individualists. - so I'm all for everybody adopting a single good rating system - namely, the ten-point thing. Somehow, I don't feel the same way about the various brackets -- (()), [ ]. ( * * ). etc. (tho you might be consistent about one asterisk or two) -- now in use. Your line "We remain a slave to originality" is a diamond. It should be enshrined somewhere in an anthology of the best in fanwriting. (Teehee--ed) DOTS was much enjoyed. I know just how you felt when you concluded that it is of such things that real living is made. Some English essayist of the last century said that such things should be the one aim of life; which I don't agree with that, they're something worth working for. Sinnykuhss is apparently DB Thompson, judging by what little I know of that worthy. STF RECOLLECTIONS surprisingly good; I was fearing another hacky article of "What science fiction stories I read first." SLANIDER takes a tremendous jump this time. The first two paragraphs are a very good imitation of Poe, tho Joe's use of "you and I" when an objective case is called for hurt it a little. I can check him to 22 decimals on his comments re fan personalities. Maybe I like this part of the dept so much because it is a lot like my Cosmic Tales columns. His suggestion for a fan movie wins me over, too, is the thing can be done; my automatic reaction to the idea was one of scoffing. I'm not sure Joe's comments about the pro writers are 100% well-founded, but they make chewable reading. Re his question about why fan-atheists call themselves agnostics, my answer would be that they see no good reason for believing in God, but do not feel that it is utterly impossible that there's some truth in religion, and are willing to give it a chance. Doc's article on a hack subject is the goat of the issue. His suggestion that there should be a fan bureau to advise fans
