FANFARE 9 "Then there are the plans for building the spaceships," said Holmes. "We must hurry and -------- Roger, you're not listening to me." "What ? --- er, were you saying something, Tom? asked Bacon. Bacon, the scientist, was practically lost in his thoughts: "Thought those people had the knowledge to save us from annihilation, they themselves were completely destroyed. Think how wonderful it must have been then, with their great scientists, with people believing in them, and not as it is today, with ignorance rampant everywhere, even the King ignoring simple truths of science. Why, I even showed him plans for making a simple instrument which would make the stars seem nearer to the eye. He commanded me under the pain of death, to either burn the plans or hide them, and never show them to anybody. Ignorance, ignorance everywhere. Why wasn't I born five hundred years from now, instead of this age. Months passed. Bacon tried to interest the King in the document, but instead was commanded to leave the palace, never to return with such nonsense. He appealed to the high Church officers, and even the Pope. But when the Pope had received him, he answered kindly, "Mr. Bacon, what you say might be true. But we believe in God, and are confident that He will spare us from such a disaster. Go now, and if you are still intent, may success be ever present with you. And so Bacon left, disappointed and bitter. There was one door left open for him, and he took advantage of it. He called eight of his friends who were "scientists" and "delvers into the unknown." One week passed. Finally all of the eight scientists were assembled in Bacon's house. When all was ready Bacon arose and said: - "Gentlemen, I have assembled you here for a reason which I have already told you. I place great faith in this manuscript. The spaceships which have remarkable properties of flying through the air, unsupported by anything seems genuine. The ships are to be made of diamond, the hardest substance known." "But Roger," interrupted one of the group, "How can this be done?" A small piece of diamond weighing an ounce would cost thousands of dollars. How is this possible?" "Gentlemen," resumed Bacon, "When I first read thes plans, I, too, was incredulous. These plans state equipment for making diamonds artificially." "artificially!" echoed the group, "It can't be done!" "Yes it can," replied Bacon, "The plans state that a mysterious current of some kind of energy can be made, and if used the right way in a furnace, it can raise the temperature of the substance to such a high degree that when it cools, the substance will be changed to a diamond." "What substance is this you will use that will be changed into a diamond?" asked another of the group. "It is merely a black powder obtained from burning substances," answered Bacon. "I hope you are right," declared another. "Gentlemen," began Bacon again, "I hope you will all have faith in me. You know I have never failed you before, and I will not fail you now. Now here is my plan. I do not know, just yet, when this catastrophe will occur, but we must hurry. We must build one of these spaceships, and you and your families will be transported to another planet. It will be hard on all of us, I know, but civilization must go on! The planet we are going toing to is almost like Earth. We are lucky in that respect. We have all the necessary directions; all we need now is materials to begin building the ship. We must hurry. Who knows when the time draws near. We must be prepared. We seek a new world where civilization must and will go on!
