AS THE CURTAIN RISES by the Editor With this issue of THE SCIENTIFICTIONIST, another new fanzine has been added to the multifarious crop already flooding fandom. We have definite reason for bringing out this fanzine, and we feel that it will, in time, have a definite place in Stfandom. The idea of an all-Stf serious fanzine has been knocking around in my head ever since I entered fandom and found that there was no such fanzine. (At the time I thought that all fanzines would be like this) However, nothing much was really done about this until last December when I had quite a lengthy discussion with Sgt. Lynn Bridges, who, I discovered, had much the same ideas as I had. Lynn wrote the article, "The Forgotten Fandom" which appeared in Black STAR number 10. In this article Lynn told how the sincere Stf fans were in reality the forgotten fandom, because they had no means of really keeping in touch with each other except through correspondence. He concluded by saying that what this group needed was a good fanzine that would publish real Stf [the f with an underline] ictional material; material that somehow never got in the other fanzines. The publication of his article has aroused many letters of support, for which I am more than grateful. As for the name of this magazine, it is called THE SCIENTIFICTIONIST because I beleive in calling a spade a spade. Many fanzine editors fall over backwards in an effort to find some pecular name for their mag, just as long as it has never been used before. I'll probably get half a dozen letters telling me that the name was used for Joe Blow's mag in 1935, but the name will stay as it now is. We'd like all of you readers to contribute something to the next STF COMMENTARY. You'll notice that some of the comments in this issue are a little out of date, but I think that with the infrequency of prozine publishing, you will be able to remember back that far. Whenever you run across some unusual or interesting idea in a story, ot something else that yu think would be of interest to others, how about writing it down and sending it in? If enough interesting letters are received, we'll probably have a letter column next issue. I'd like to request that when you write in your opinion of the mag please list all of the material herein in your order of your preference. It is not necessary to use any point or rating system, just list the stories, 1, 2, 3, etc. The results will be tabulated and will be published in the next issue. As a special service we are sending two copies to every service-fan subscriber. One copy is being mailed to the fans home address so that if the other copy is lost in the mails, or the service-fan has to discard a copy in moving, he will still have a copy for his collection. Our thanks to Kent Bone for providing the covers for this issue, and to Walt Coslet for helping to cut the stencils. ---------------------------------- Many of my correspondents have asked me a question about the current Lemuria stories in AMAZING. One of the most interest, to me, is just how the hoax will finally end. At the Michicon, it was the general concensus of opinion that after several years Palmer would come out and politely say the whole thing was a hoax, just as he exploded his "racial memory" theory. However, I personally do not think that this will be the case. Dunkelberger has asserted that Palmer believes the stories himself. This seems to be the truth, for Dunk has had several personal chats with RAP and seems to know him quite well. There, I think that the whole thing will end when Shaver stops sending manuscripts to Palmer. If RAP really believes the stuff, Shaver could give him some half-baked excuse (More editorial ramblings on page 14) --(page 2)--
