thought PLANET was taking over the field of adventure fiction. Peacock himself has said, I believe, that he is publishing the good old-fashioned type of scienctifiction. I believe that he is doing a good job of it, except for one fault. PLANET's stories are, almost without exception, well written and read smoothly. There are certain passages of descriptive writing in some of the De Pina yarns and others that would easily come up to the ASTOUNDINGS of the 1930s. There is only one trouble with PLANET. That is the almost-boring sameness of its stories PLANET has acheived good writing, but is it at the cost of originality!! However, even here there is reason to believe that we will see improvement in the future. There have been an increasing number of stories in PLANET that have been away from the familiar triology, even though they are still too few in number. An excellent example is "The Last Monster" in a recent issue. There we have an idea underlying the story, (Contrast of the psychologies of Terrans and the Urgan), yet which has plenty of swift action and good writing. The only magazine which I think is going downhill is THRILLING WONDER. I think this is caused primarily by the introduction of "light" fantasy into the magazine, and slanting the Stf the same direction. Take for example "Devils From Darkonia" in a recent issue. Here was an interesting idea that might have been well developed into an excellent novel. Instead of this the idea is almost completely submerged beneath corny writing which is supposed to be humorus. I may be mistaken in saying that this change in TWS is for the worst, as this type of story seems to be gaining in popularity all the time. So much for the present-day pros.
