IS "DERO" RAY PALMER IN AN INSANE ASYLUM! READ THESE STARTLING STATEMENTS BY FORREST ACKERMAN AND JACK SPEER REPRINTED FROM STEFNEWS NUMBER 51 JUNE 16, 1946 A 2-pg airmail letter from Wm Hamling to FJAokerman states RAP was taken to the Asylum last wk in May. "Technically he had a "nervous breakdown" but there's no doubt but that his condition is really a mental crackup." Hamling states Palmer implicitly believed in Shaver, began hearing "voices" during office hours, became increasingly erratic, believed his life in danger. In dramatic unknown fashion he was dragged (by Hamling & Howard Browne) from the far corner of the coal bin in the basement of his home, a blank expression on his face, in his hands clasped a small magnet and a piece of carbon. He is being treated with electrical therapy. The company is contrite; after using up already.paid-for Shaver mss. (Ray in his enthusiasm bought over a million words) an attempt will be made to return Amazing to "normal*. Palmer was held in high regard by his employers & employees; in deference to him, his name will be retained on the books temporarily, tho Hamling has taken over editing. Statement by Ackerman: I have aired this info to Spear without first checking if the letter was actually written by Hamling, without contacting Ziff-Davis, or Palmer's wife, or determining if there actually is a Dunning Asylum, and Palmer being treated there. Hamling's letter came in response to one I had written Palmer. Everything appears to be on the level. I am making no comment at this time, but will leave Speer to editorialise. Statement by Speer: The Chicago directory shows the state mental hospital to be at Dunning, a suburb. I have just called Ziff-Davis in Chicago, asking to speak to the editor of Amazing Stories. Mr. Browne was out to lunch, they said, so I talked to his secretary. She was a bit evasive, but confirmed that Hamling is now doing the editing. She said that Palmer would return when he recovered, admitting only that he was seriously ill. FOR •EM AND AGIN •Ell (cont'd from page 19) If a radar beam could be devised that would pierce suoh a solid (to radar that is) medium as water, we might perceivably map the seemingly bottomless ocean. By this means it might even be possible to ascertain if there ever were lost continents as liu or Atlantis* — George T. Wetzel, 3108 Woodland Ave., Baltimore 15, Md. EDITORIAL RAMBLINGS (cont'd from page 12) In Vampire, Harry Warner says that there are many fanzine writers who would be glad to do articles if they were given some ideas to go on. Using this assumption, here are some ideas for articles for Scientifictionist: Stfist badly needs a regular column reviewing and dissecting the current prozines. (K.B. has just notified us that he won't be able to continue his pro review column.) If you*d like to do this, as each mag comes out, write up some comments and send them in. (review SS, TWS, ASF, & PS, as well as stfictional material in other mags). Better yet, why not have a prozine forum! Why don't you readers all write your reactions and send them in, so we*d have a diversity of opinions, and more ideas! How about an article on the lapse in stf between the social "sciences" and the physical sciences! See Bryce Walton*s letter in the Fall '46 PS for elaboration of what I mean. And how about a comprehensive review of some of those prozines that folded a while back the ones with worthwhile, yet seldom mentioned stories! Astonishing and Comet, for example. See you again next issue and don't forget to write, who knows, I might even answer some of your letters..... To most people nothing is more troublesome than the effort of thinking. --James Bryce Page 20
