III IOWA CITY, IOWA, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1918 [appears as Thursday November 7th on document] NUMBER 21 [appears as 20 on document] [The title appears as November 9 on main screen] UNIVERSITY BIDS WELCOME TO ALUMNI AND MANY GUESTS Pennants, Flags, and a Spotless Campus Greet the Strangers As They Enter Grounds PROGRAM BEGINS AT 8:30 Exhibition of Bayonet Fighting Races, Songs, and Band Music Given in Afternoon. With "clean collar and shining face," the University bids her guests welcome. Alternating pennants and United States flags are posted along the east side of the campus, and each building wears a brand new flag, while the campus has been cleared of leaves and paper. Credit for this work is due to the energies of the S.A.T.C. men and to the department of grounds and buildings, under the direction of Mr. Bright. Today's program will begin at 8:30 a. m. with military inspection of the entire S.A.T.C. on Iowa field, followed by a close order drill by Co. N. Automotive trips are scheduled for 10 and 11 to give the alumni and guests a chance to visit the West Side campus. By the courtesy of the Iowa City commercial club luncheon will be given alumni and guests to 12 o'clock in the club rooms over the Garden theater. To See Bayonet Drill As a curtain raiser and exhibition of small bayonet fighting will be given by S.A.T.C. men at 1:45. At 2:30, Iowa will "go for the Gophers." Between halves of the game, there will be an S.A.T.C. equipment race put on by a company of the S.A.T.C. At a given signal the men in full equipment will run five yards, then drop their bayonets, run five more yards and leave their guns, another five yards and they will deposit their leggings, and so on until much of their equipment has been dropped. The race will then be to pick up the various articles and put them on properly. A prize wil be awarded to the victor.
