Schroeder of the physical education department from Paul Bender. "Abe" was graduated from the liberal arts college last year and was sent across as an interpreter. Dear Dad: Well, here I am in the land of speck and sauerkraut, but it is a beautiful place to be in, modern and up to date in every respect, pretty buildings and wonderful views. Since leaving the states I have seen quite a few interesting things, the trip across the pond being immense, and from the time I left Liverpool until now, I have had an experience that I wouldn't exchange for the four years of school at Iowa. Arrived at Paris the middle of November--some city, but not for me. I was connected there with the Base Censor Office. A few days before Christmas seven of us left for Frier Germany to establish a German censorship office. On the way we passed through Chauteau Thierry and several other places blown to pieces. We also went through Nancy, then tp Metz where we spent a day in sight seeing before passing on to Frier. After a week's time two of us left for Coblenz where we started a similar office. I haven't had any mail since October 15 and don't know a thing that has happened at Iowa. I happened to see an American paper giving the football scores and at Paris I read an Iowa Alumnus. We are quartered in an old German barracks called the Pheinanschauss Kaserne. Upon going up the stairs an interesting sentence greets us, "Kannonendonner is ouser grusz." It certainly was their grusz at Chateau Thierry. About fifty yards from the barracks flieszt der Rhein so you see we are "diewachton Rhein" every night. All the barracks in this country were built to last forever, the ones we are in are made of rocks and iron and would serve better as a penitentiary. The food here is fine, you'd think so if you saw me. I bet I couldnt chin myself twice. I weighed 175 with my overcoat on' I couldn't do any gymnastics with all that "fett" hanging on to me. Haven't located Weinne as yet, would like to see the old boy. The last I heard of him he was in a hospital at Biarritz, France. How's Frank and the rest of the men? Well, Dad, must close in a hurry as it's almost 7 o'clock and I need a big supper before climbing into the day. PAUL ___________________________ One Can Live Without Art--But Not So Well Art Dept.
