I have simply tried to do what seemed best each day as each day came." - Lincoln - NATIONAL COMPETITION After the rise and fall of numerous attempts to unite the world into one state by means of force and domination upon the part of one nationality, comes at least the first real attempt of all nations to unite and form a world state, whose principle shall be that of democracy, and of which no nation shall be the dominant head. The birth of a League of Nations is the concrete expression of a conviction that has been spreading throughout the world that cooperation should be the principle of relationship between nations, and not competition. War has always been the ultimate outcome of competition between countries, and the peoples of the world have come to the conclusion that this will always be the case, and therefore, must change the principle of relationship between states, if permanent peace is ever to be secured. Consequently, since the desire for peace in the world has been the prime force in bringing the nations of the world together, we are not surprised that the proposed constitution of the League of Nations should commence with a preamble, wherein the object of the league is expressed to be that of furthering international cooperation, and of preserving international peace and security amongst the countries of the world; and that eighteen of the twenty-six articles are devoted to the plan of adjusting disputes between nations, so as to prevent those nations from entering into war with one another. - PLACING OUR GRADUATES Men rather than jobs are at a premium in Iowa among college graduates. The extension division of the University which has become something of an employment bureau for returning soldiers and sailors has at least twenty-five positions requiring college graduates which they are unable to fill. Positions in the mercantile field have been qualified for in great numbers and the University has been able to place more than fifty men in the last month or two in positions of responsibility in business. Executive, merchandising, advertising, salesmanship, accounting, buying, and selling positions in business are all open to college graduates. Returning men from the service have been dropping in at the extension division in the hope that the men who are conducting short courses and lectures to merchants of the state might know of jobs for them. Merchants all over Iowa are anxious to get college graduates and all calling for more than the University can supply. Every man placed in such a position has made good so far. - The Y.W.C.A. held a cozy at the Rigler home on North Clinton street last night.
