SUNDAY, MAY 11, 1919 THE DAILY IOWAN STATE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA PAGE THREE RESEARCH ASST. INVENTS Bunch Completes Pitch Range Audiometer to Measure Hearing Cordia C. Bunch, research assistant in psycho-physics of autology has recently perfected the new instrument called a pitch range audiometer. By means of this contrivance it is possible to measure quickly and accurately keenness of hearing at any pitch within the range of the human ear. This invention marks a step in advance in the solution of psychological problems and as a means of diagnosis in ear troubles. During the past two years Mr. Bunch has acted as assistant to Dr. L. W. Dean, dean of the college of medicine, using preliminary models of his instrument in measuring the hearing of patients. Mr. Bunch is scheduled to demonstrate his audiometer at the national convention of autologists at Atlantic City in June, at which time Dr. Dean will introduce the instrument to the medical profession and report results of investigation. During the war an early model of the invention was recommended to the navy for use in the selection of U-boat listeners. The instrument was also used in S. A. T. C. days for the selection of radio men and is being developed further for that purpose. One application of the invention is in the analysis of capacity for hear in music. For this reason psychological research will be much abetted by its use. Mr. Bunch's new instrument is equally valuable to the medical profession for preliminary investigations show that by making examinations of children a number of inceptive cases of ear troubles may be discovered before they have become acute and may thus receive timely treatment.
