Sunday, June 29, 1919 THE DAILY IOWAN, STATE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA PAGE THREE SIGMA CHIS HOLD CONCLAVE Three Hundred Attend Fraternity Biennial in Des Moines C.H. Goodwin, Ralph Good, Albert [Jenkins?], Selby Edwards, and Sim [Therry?] are among the Sigma Chis from the University who attended the national biennial convention of the fraternity which was concluded last night at Des Moines. Three hundred members, both active and alumni, were present at the convention held at the Chamberlain Hotel. Thursday afternoon a memorial service for more than 100 gold star members was held in the St. Paul's Episcopal church of Des Moines. Pledges from Leland Standard, Iowa, and Ames were initiated into the fraternity Thursday evening. Prominent Sigma Chis who attended the convention are: Judge Howard Ferris of Cincinnati, Dr. A.A. [Adams?] of Topeka, Kan., J.T. Miller of Pittsburgh, Judges Lawerence De [Graff?] and George Wilson of Des Moines, and John McClain of Salt Lake City. O.E. Van DOren, University director of band and orchestral music, has made an engagement for the summer to play with Eppel's orchestra at [illegible], Lake Okoboji. The University band will not make a tour this summer, since the cancelling of the California trip came too late for other arrangements to be made. Howard H. Maynard, a graduate of the University, has been appointed professor of economics at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn. Ivan L. Pollock, M.A., who has been connected with the State Historical Society, has accepted a position as assistant professor of economics at the State Teachers college [in?] Cedar Falls. George Emerson Davis has returned to Iowa City from the service. Mr. Davis has been in both France and Germany with the American troops. He is a Phi Delta Kappa [man?] and well known to summer session students. Harriet Dougherty of Washington [illegible] Grinnell student, has returned to her home after several days' visit with Romola Latchem. The women in the classes of journalism gave a picnic Thursday evening at the city parl in honor of Anne [Austin?], editor of the Peoples Popular Monthly and formerly feature writer for the Lansis City Post. Fourteen girls attended. Den George F. Kay went to Des Moines this week to attend the meeting of the Iowa Geological Survey Board. NEW YORK PRACTICE CLAIMS DR. BAUMANN Dr. R.B. Gibson who is to take the place of Dr. Louis Baumann as assistant professor of medicine and director of the theory and practice department of the chemical research laboratory will arrive about July 1. Dr. Gibson comes from the Philipines [sic] where he has been professor of physical chemistry at the government school of medicine at Manilla. He holds the degree of doctor of philosophy from Yale university. Dr. Baumann goes to New York to practice. OFFICIAL NOTICE All students registered in the summer session who expect to receive degrees or certificates (nurses' training school certificates or certificates of the college of education) at the close of the six weeks' term of the summer session are requested to call at once at the Registrar's office in order to file formal application. Each such student should write his name exactly as he wishes it to appear in his diploma or certificate. All interested should attend to this matter immediately because a student otherwise qualified to graduate at the close of the summer session may fail to be recommended. Respectfully, H.C. DORCAS, Registrar UNIVERSITY DENTAL CLINIC NOW OPEN Thirty-six dentistry students have been registered for the summer session of six weeks. The clinic is open, and thus far has been as well patronized as during the regular school year. A course in graphic and plastic arts has been adopted as a required course in the dental college. The work takes up the shape and development of the skull. Most of the dents who graduated in June will start practicing as soon as they hear from the sate board as to their final examinations. DR. BOSE WRITES BOOK "Fifteen Years in America," the book just written by Dr. Sudhindra Bose, of the University, is to be published in India soon. The volume is written from Dr. Bose's own point of view. It is his idea to give to the Hindu people a "cross-section view of American life." Education, social reform, and America's governmental system are some of the subjects emphasized in the book. Mrs. B.F. Longworthy of Chicago and Mrs. Ruste of Charles City were guests at an informal dinner given by eight University women at Hotel Jefferson Thursday evening at six. Both women are attending the Conference for Women here. [Ad] Religious Fundamentals A series of sermons beginning June 29 at the FIRST UNITARIAN CHURCH University students who have not yet found a church home in the city are especially invited to come to church here.
