Thursday, July 10, 1919 THE DAILY IOWAN, STATE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA PAGE THREE [Photo Caption] State Historical Society Library] ABOUT THE CAMPUS "It is not exaggeration to say that more historical writing is done in the rooms of the State Historical society of Iowa than is done in the rooms of many similar organizations in America." was the statement of Dr. Benjamin F. Shambaugh, superintendent, editor, and administrative head of the society. "The library of the society contains over 52,000 titles, ranking, therefore, as one of the largest in Iowa, and in it is the most extensive collection of books and pamphlets pertaining to Iowa that is to be found either within or without the state," he continued. The library and research rooms of the state Historical society are located on the third floor of the hall of liberal arts. The hours are from 8: A.M. to 10:00 P.M. daily and during this time the books and pamphlets are accessible on equal terms to all—the members of the society, students of the university, and citizens of the state. The State Historical society was organized in 1857, when it was first voted a permanent annual appropriation by the Sixth General assembly. As the society grew the allowance for its support became more liberal, and its appropriation is now $24,000 annually. Membership to the society is obtained through election by the board of curators and the payment of $3 per year. The activities of the society are directed not only to the collecting and preservation of documents of historical importance, but also to research and critical publication. In the research rooms of the library specialists are constantly at work investigating and compelling the materials of the state and local history, and here volumes and monographs are constantly in the making. These are published under the direction of the superintendent and editor. They are distributed to members of the society and placed in officially designated despositories [sic] throughout the state. Practically all the public and college libraries in the state of Iowa are listed as official depositories. Thus in a sense it may be said that the library of the State Historical society has become the mother of scores of branch libraries scattered throughout the state, for in every official despository [sic] the publications of the society have become the nucleus of a collection of books and pamphlets relating to state and local history. The library of the State Historical society is in charge of Miss Ruth Galligher, upon whom the university recently conferred the degree of doctor of philosophy. She is the author of several historical monographs, and recently the society published a volume written by her on "The Legal and Political Status of Women in Iowa." Another publication of the year was the biography of James Baird Weaver, by Fred E. Haynes, which was issued in the Iowa Biographical series. A third book which is now in press is a biography of William P. Hepburn, written by John E. Briggs. The society has also been publishing monthly since July, 1917, a pamphlet under the title of "Iowa and War", which undertakes to deal with a variety of military matters connected with the history of Iowa. Although some of the books in the library are purchased by the society, many of them are secured through gift or donation. Located at Iowa City, the library and research activities of the State Historical society are regarded as a most valuable asset to the University.
